Uniondale · The Girl Who Hitched a Ride

The best-known modern ghost story in South Africa takes place at Uniondale in the Eastern Cape: a driver at night meets a girl hitching a ride, in a dress, saying very little, and she disappears at a certain bend.

After that she appeared first, before each accident. A stretch of road there came to be called “her bend”. Some say they have seen her change position in the rear-view mirror; some say she was in fact a passenger in the crash of that year.

People who drive that stretch slow down. Whether they believe it or not makes no difference.
