Soweto · Two Nobel Prizes on Two Streets

Soweto · Two Nobel Prizes on Two Streets

Soweto is a district south-west of Johannesburg. Under apartheid it was used to house black residents, and rows of houses stretch out as far as the eye can see.

In 1976 school students went into the streets to protest against being taught in Afrikaans, the police opened fire, and the first to fall was a boy of thirteen. His photograph went around the world.

On the same street are the former homes of two Nobel Peace Prize laureates, both of them museums now. The best tours in the district are led by local residents.
