Drakensberg · Paintings on the Rock Face

The Drakensberg lies across eastern South Africa like a wall. The summits are basalt, and tens of thousands of San (Bushman) rock paintings remain on the cliff faces: antelope, hunters, and human figures that change shape.

The San painted people, animals and the spirit world on the same wall; the paintings were not decoration but part of ritual. Mist and waterfalls hang from the top of the cliffs, and the weather changes very fast.

The rule on the mountain paths is to watch the clouds. Local people say the mist in these mountains comes faster than you can walk.
