My Son Sanctuary · The Towers Swallowed by the Jungle

My Son was the religious centre of the Champa kingdom. Its brick towers have stood in the jungle for more than a thousand years; many have collapsed by half, and the figures on them are worn down by time to outlines.

No one has yet been able to reproduce fully how the brick joints of these towers were laid. Local people call them “the houses of the ancestors”.

The site was bombed during the Vietnam War. Those who clear it say the ground near some tower bases is always colder than elsewhere, and that the grass grows more slowly there.
