Highgate Cemetery · A Graveyard You Queue For in Daylight

Highgate Cemetery is built on a hillside, where Egyptian-style tombs, fallen crosses and ivy-covered angels crowd together; it is the best-known graveyard in London.

Its most widely known story is the “Highgate Vampire”: in the 1970s people claimed to have seen a figure rising from a grave on the eastern side of the cemetery, and after that the number of people climbing the wall at night rose sharply.

Today you need a ticket, and you go in with a group. The keeper offers only one warning: do not fall behind in the last ten minutes before closing.
