Glamis Castle · The Room That Must Not Be Opened
Share
Glamis Castle is one of Scotland’s best-known “haunted castles”: Shakespeare borrowed its legend for Macbeth, in which King Duncan is murdered here.
Inside the castle there is talk of a “monster room”: in one room the family is said to keep something it has always concealed, and misfortune follows whoever looks. One earl is said to have gone in and not spoken for a whole day afterwards.
The castle is still lived in. Visitors see only some of the rooms; that door is locked year after year, and the reason given is always the same: private quarters.
