Aldwych Ghost Station · A Platform Still Lit After Closing

Aldwych is the best known of the London Underground's disused stations. It closed in 1994, but the branch was never stripped: the platforms, the tiles and the old advertisements are still in place, and the lights are switched on whenever the tunnels are used for filming.

The story attached to it is a station announcement in a woman's voice, heard from trains passing the closed platform at night — sometimes calling the name of a station that no longer answers to it. Aldwych appeared in a 1960s horror film, which is where a good part of the atmosphere comes from.

Staff give a plainer account: the equipment of the old station was not all removed, and now and then it responds on its own.

Bureau note: still listed as a station. Still lit for filming.
