Mount Nemrut · Placing Himself Beside the Gods
Share
The summit of Mount Nemrut is an artificial mound of crushed stone. King Antiochus I built his own tomb here and placed his own image on the east and west terraces alongside those of Zeus, Apollo and Heracles.
Earthquakes threw the huge heads down from the platform, and they now sit there, unable to look up again.
There are no other buildings on the mountain, only the stone and itself. The night watchman says that after sunset the wind passes between the statues and the sound is very long.
