Ayutthaya Historical Park · The City That Burned for Seven Days and Nights
Share
Ayutthaya was once the most prosperous capital in Southeast Asia. When the Burmese army broke into it in 1767 the city burned for seven days and nights, and the heads of the Buddha images were struck off and left across the ground.
The best-known sight in the ruins now is a Buddha head held in the roots of a tree. Some say the Buddha, scattered by the fire, grew back into place inside the tree by itself.
After the park closes in the evening, the people who tend it sometimes say they hear a bell. There is no bell here any more.
