Visby · The Names Outside the Wall

Visby was a trading town on the Baltic and belonged to the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages. When the Danes attacked in 1361 the peasant army outside the walls was almost wiped out; nearly two thousand are said to have been buried in mass graves.

Those pits were later opened and became important archaeological material for the Battle of Visby — the bones still carry wounds made by weapons and armour.

The town wall and the church ruins are still standing. Walking the whole circuit of the gates takes about half a day.
