Vadstena Abbey · The Nuns Who Stayed

Vadstena Abbey · The Nuns Who Stayed

Vadstena Abbey was the convent founded by Saint Bridget. From the end of the fourteenth century, generation after generation of nuns lived, prayed and copied books here, until it was closed after the Reformation.

Several wax-sealed remains are kept in glass cases in the church, and the town has a story that the figures of nuns are seen walking in the cloister.

The abbey is now a church and a museum, and the organ is still played. The caretaker says the ones in the cases are people from 600 years ago, and all their names are in the register.
