Stockholm Old Town · There Is Another Layer Below
Share
The lanes of Stockholm’s Old Town are wide enough for one person, the houses stand on an island, and below ground the medieval cellars, water channels and a whole set of sealed-off basements are still there.
The stories told in the Old Town fall into two kinds: that footsteps can be heard in the underground restaurants and arcades, and that in some of the old hotels where tourists stay, the doors open by themselves at night.
Old Town guides say: this is one of the cleanest old towns in Europe, and the ground underfoot is among the least walked.
