Ale’s Stones · Stones Set Out Like a Ship
Share
Ale’s Stones is fifty-nine boulders set out in the outline of a ship on a coastal plateau, the prow facing the sea, aligned with the sunrise at midsummer and the sunset at midwinter.
How old it is and who raised it have never been settled; some say the Bronze Age, others insist it is much later. Local legend attributes it to a king buried by the shore.
In summer people come to watch the sunset here. The wind is strong and there is no railing on the plateau.
