Tunguska · The Explosion That Left No Crater
Share
In June 1908 there was a great explosion along the Tunguska River in Siberia: more than two thousand square kilometres of forest fell in a fan shape, and windows were shattered hundreds of kilometres away — the first expeditions did not reach the area until twenty years later.
Whether it was a small asteroid breaking up in the air, a fragment of a comet or a gas explosion has been argued ever since. There is no impact crater at the site, and that is the heart of the problem.
The local Evenki said it was a fire god punishing people. They moved their pastures and did not go back for decades.
