Ipatiev House · The Dynasty That Ended in a Cellar

In July 1918 the last tsar, Nicholas II, his family and their attendants were held in Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg and shot in the cellar; the bodies were taken to a mine pit outside the city and destroyed to hide the traces.

The house was used as office space for a long time afterwards and was ordered demolished in 1977; in the 1990s the remains were found and identified by DNA, and in 2000 the whole family was canonised as saints.

The Church on the Blood was built on the site. There is a small memorial where the cellar stood, and few people go in.
