Malbork Castle · The Largest Brick Castle in the World

Malbork Castle was the headquarters of the Teutonic Order, built of red brick and the largest brick castle in the world; three courtyards, a moat and a drawbridge, and an underground central heating system, on the scale of a town.

The Order ruled from here for nearly two hundred years. The castle was later turned into barracks and warehouses more than once, was badly damaged in the Second World War, and was restored to its original form after the war.

The walls are lit at night. The keeper says the liveliest place in the castle on a summer night is the Amber Hall, where the echo doubles the sound of a person’s footsteps.
