Książ Castle · The Tunnels Left Half Dug

Książ Castle · The Tunnels Left Half Dug

Książ Castle is the third largest castle in Poland, with more than four hundred rooms, a leaning clock tower, and long tunnels and underground halls dug out beneath it.

In the Second World War the Nazis occupied it, turned it into a headquarters and began driving tunnels underground; the work was never finished before the war ended. The prisoners digging the tunnels died in great numbers.

Part of the tunnels is now open and other entrances are sealed. At the end of a tour visitors are reminded: do not walk on your own into places where there is no light.
