The Bataan Peninsula · Those Who Walked This Land

In 1942, after the American and Filipino forces surrendered to the Japanese at Bataan, prisoners of war were forced to march more than a hundred kilometres to a camp. Those who fell along the way numbered in the thousands, and the route is called the Death March.

Memorials and crosses stand along the road today. Farmers here still turn up old equipment while working the fields.

People in this area say that around Qingming there is the sound of marching feet in the fields, coming from the far side of the woods and then scattering in the wind.
