The Ica Stones · Stones Carved with Strange Things

From the 1960s onwards, tens of thousands of carved stones circulated in the markets around Ica. They carry images of dinosaurs, surgery, telescopes and people riding animals, none of which fits the archaeological timeline.

The doctor who collected them opened a museum and wrote books claiming they were the record of a lost ancient civilisation. In 1966 a journalist watched local farmers carving the stones and then burying them to age them, and published the account.

The museum is still open. The labels in front of the display cases keep both accounts.
