Fiordland National Park · The Place Where the Rain Never Stops

Fiordland National Park lies in the south-west corner of New Zealand’s South Island, where more than a dozen fiords bend inland through ice-cut valleys, cliff walls rise over a thousand metres, and waterfalls fall straight from the tops into the sea.

It rains here more than two hundred days a year; when the rain comes the waterfalls multiply, and thousands of water lines appear on the walls of Milford Sound. Forest grows on slopes that are almost vertical, and there are far more birds than people.

When the boat goes into the fiord the skipper cuts the engine and lets everyone listen to the waterfalls. It is quiet enough to hear the mountains.
