Heddal Stave Church · The Largest One in Norway

Heddal Stave Church is the largest stave church still standing in Norway, its roof rising in tiered towers, dragons carved into the timber, the outer walls tarred several times over.

Inside, paintings from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries cover the walls, telling Bible stories. It is still a parish church and holds services now and then.

A wooden building beside the church sells coffee. The caretaker says: this church has lasted because it is repaired every time, not because it cannot be damaged.
