Dovrefjell · The One Road Through the Mountain

Dovrefjell · The One Road Through the Mountain

Dovrefjell has always been the crossing between northern and southern Norway: no trees on the plateau, the wind turning whenever it likes, and winter storms able to bury the road within hours. There are hot springs and musk oxen on the mountain, and inns and refuge huts that have stood for centuries.

The old saying in Norway is that something in the mountain does not want people to pass; a traveller who lost the way would hear a voice telling him to take another road, and those who followed it never came back.

The road and the railway both run through here now. The reason given on the closure sign is: wind.
