Muiderslot Castle · The Water in the Moat
Share
Muiderslot Castle stands on a dike at the mouth of the river, with a square curtain wall, five round towers and a ring of moat — the most textbook example of a medieval Dutch castle.
Its first lord, Floris V, was later imprisoned by his own nobles and killed while being moved. The castle changed hands many times afterwards, and part of it fell into the river.
The well in the courtyard connects to the river. The keeper says that when the moat rises, the water in the well changes taste. That has not changed in centuries.
