The Drenthe Hunebedden · No One Knows Who Carried Them
Share
More than fifty hunebedden lie scattered across the north-east of the Netherlands, built from boulders weighing dozens of tonnes. The stones were pushed here from Scandinavia in the ice age; people could not have moved them without some other means.
So the stories gave them to giants, and others said the “kabouters”, the little people, carried them at night. Archaeology confirms that they were collective Neolithic tombs, in use for several hundred years.
The chambers are low and you have to stoop to enter. Locals say you must not speak loudly here. It is not a rule, it is a habit.
