Mount Kinabalu · The Woman Who Waited on the Summit

Mount Kinabalu is one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia. Its summit is a bare granite platform, and at sunrise a sea of cloud passes below your feet.

The Kadazan story is that a woman who lost her husband lives on the mountain. She waited a long time at the summit; her child was carried off by the birds of the mountain, and her crying turned into the call of those birds.

The rule of the community is that you must not make noise on reaching the summit, and must not take anything from the mountain away. They say the mountain knows people.
