Genting Highlands stands on a summit at 1,700 metres and is the only legal casino in Malaysia. Fog lies on the mountain most of the year.

Several stories circulate here with a fixed shape: an older guest in the old block meets “the guest sharing the room”; staff late at night see a figure in an empty car in the car park; or a lift stops at a floor where no one is staying.

The rules on the mountain are well known: on entering the casino, do not call out names, and do not look back at an empty chair. Believers and sceptics alike follow them.
