Zacatecas’s Eden Mine · Going Down by Mine Cart
Share
Zacatecas is a city built on silver mining, and the Eden Mine on its edge was worked from the sixteenth century into the twentieth. Its tunnels descend in seven levels, the deepest hundreds of metres below the surface.
Visitors today ride a small mine train into an adit and then walk. The tunnels hold effigies of miners, ore carts and ventilation pipes, with strict rules on lighting and oxygen monitoring.
Guides warn visitors not to leave the route. One stretch of tunnel is flooded, and it is said that equipment never brought up still lies beneath the water.
