Copper Canyon · The Hardest Road in the World

Copper Canyon is deeper than the Grand Canyon; several canyons run together here, and the Tarahumara live in them. They are known for long-distance running, able to keep going for dozens of hours without rest, in sandals and a length of cloth.

In their belief the mountains and the animals are neighbours of the ancestors, and people must go and apologise to the mountains. Caves and rock faces deep in the canyon carry old paintings and places where offerings are left.

A train crosses the canyon, one of the slowest and longest scenic railways in the world. The locals watch it and say: that is not the speed we walk at.
