The Medina of Tangier · Living Between Two Seas

Tangier sits on the slope of the old town, facing the Strait of Gibraltar; on a clear day you can see the mountains of Spain. Dozens of writers and musicians lived here and wrote it up as a place where anything can happen.

The lanes are narrow and steep, white walls and blue doors, and every turn changes the smell. Locals say the old town has “a stretch of road you never finish”: you think you have come back to where you started, but you are several streets away.

The most practical advice here is this: do not nod at the first price you are quoted.
