Belief in the Jinn · Leave Them a Corner of the House

In Moroccan folk belief the jinn share the same world as people: they live in wells, in abandoned houses, in trees and in bathhouses, and sometimes in a person.

So in some old houses a corner is deliberately left empty; you greet the house as you come in, and say something before pouring hot water; children must not go to the well alone at night, and must not step over a broom.

These are not stories from television. An old woman at the edge of the village said: you do not have to believe, but you do have to know the rules.
