Manjanggul, Jeju · The Stone Pillars Are Still Growing
Share
Manjanggul on Jeju is a lava tunnel about seven kilometres long, at a steady temperature all year round, with stone pillars and lava bridges running from the floor to the ceiling.
The older islanders call the cave a passage for snakes. Anyone who goes in must not count the pillars; count them and you are held inside, walking the same stretch over again.
When you rent a lamp at the cave, the office reminds visitors not to leave the walkway — the echo in there sometimes arrives a beat after the person does.
