Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon · The Night Watch on the Wall

Hwaseong in Suwon was built by King Jeongjo when he moved his father’s tomb. The brick and stone were laid by new methods, and it was the last great fortress of the Joseon dynasty.

In the telling, dozens of craftsmen died in the work; and after every rain, drums and footsteps are heard on the wall, going round the circuit until they stop at one stretch.

The night watch simply keeps to the route. The old rule is: do not turn around at the place where the drumming stops.
