Lake Turkana · Men Dug Out of the Lake Bed
Share
Lake Turkana is the largest desert lake in the world. Its water is salty, and it holds many fish and many crocodiles. Human fossils millions of years old and some of the earliest stone tools have been found in this region, which is called “the cradle of humankind”.
On the northern shore there is volcanic rock and black sand, the wind never stops, and the houses in the villages are built of palm fronds. The people here live by fishing and herding, and in the dry season the water recedes quickly.
Archaeologists have been digging here for decades. Local people say: what you are digging up is our ancestors — do not dig up too much.
