The Great Rift Valley · Where the Ground Has Opened

The Great Rift Valley · Where the Ground Has Opened

The East African Rift runs from the Red Sea all the way down to Mozambique. The stretch inside Kenya is tens of kilometres wide, with escarpments on either side and a line of lakes along the floor.

Geologically, this part of the continent is being pulled apart slowly. In recent years sudden subsidence and fissures have appeared in places along the rift floor, and roads built there have had to be rerouted.

Herders put it plainly: the ground does move; we simply do not live long enough to see it.
