The Old City of Nairobi · Old Buildings Beside the Railway
Share
Nairobi grew up around a railway goods yard. In the city centre the colonial-era stone buildings and narrow streets are still there, and the old yard was later turned into a station and a market.
The stories in the city are much like those elsewhere: footsteps in old buildings, voices in empty rooms, a lift that moves by itself at night. Young people tell them as jokes; the guards still walk their rounds by the rule.
The one most often mentioned is the basement records room of an old office building, where no one wants to go down alone.
