Hell’s Gate · Between Two Cliffs
Share
“Hell’s Gate” is a gorge: two high volcanic rock walls with a dry riverbed between them, geothermal steam rising from the cracks in the rock, and heat underfoot.
The name comes from the explorers who came here; what they saw was steam, sulphur and obsidian, and it seemed to them like the entrance to hell as written in books. There are no large trees in the gorge, only drought-resistant thorn and zebras walking on the hot sand.
At the far end there is a geothermal spring. Guides will warn you: do not step on the white ground — it is thin.
