Odaigahara · The Extra One in the Fog

Odaigahara · The Extra One in the Fog

Odaigahara is the wettest plateau in Japan. A white fog sits on the cedar forest all year round, and one wrong step on the trail puts you at the edge of a cliff.

The climbing records repeat one thing: walking in company through the fog, three or four of you, and when you look back there is one figure too many — or one too few.

Locals do not call it getting lost. They call it having your name written down. So people who go into the mountain together make a habit of saying all their names before they set off.
