Jomon Tunnel · The Mark on the Tunnel Roof

Jomon Tunnel · The Mark on the Tunnel Roof

The Jomon Tunnel links Kitami and Abashiri. Workers were killed and injured in numbers while it was being cut, and the tool marks on its walls are still uneven.

It is said that during the digging someone hanged himself from the roof of the shaft. Since then the tunnel has had falling rock, and footsteps that are not the wind.

The old railway rule here is: sound the whistle before you enter, and never call a companion’s name inside — the wind will bring the voice back, but not as it was.
