Bhangarh Fort · Entry Forbidden After Sunset

Bhangarh Fort · Entry Forbidden After Sunset

Bhangarh is a ruined fort and an emptied village in Rajasthan, at the edge of the Aravalli hills. The settlement inside the walls was abandoned, and it is now one of the best known ghost towns in India.

The warning at the gate is genuine and officially placed: entry after sunset is prohibited. The stated reasons are practical — the ruins are unlit, the walls are unstable, and the surrounding forest has leopards.

The other reason is the legend, which most visitors have heard before they arrive: a sorcerer, a princess, and a curse that the town would be emptied and could never be resettled. The Archaeological Survey maintains what is left and reopens the gates each morning.

Bureau note: the warning is government-issued. The story behind it is not.
