Megiddo · The Ground of the Last Battle

Megiddo · The Ground of the Last Battle

Megiddo guards a mountain pass, the crossing point of Egypt, Assyria and Israel in ancient times. It was fought over for a thousand years, each city pressed down on the one below, until more than twenty layers had piled up.

The word “Armageddon” in Revelation comes from this name, and means the ground of the final battle.

Today it is a mound with a water shaft, stables and tunnels. Beyond the fence are the fields of the Jezreel Valley — very quiet, but the local people would rather not spend the night on the hill.
