Newgrange · The Light on the Winter Solstice

Newgrange is a circular mound tomb older than the pyramids, with a “roof box” opening above the entrance passage. At sunrise on the winter solstice, light travels the passage and reaches the chamber at the back, and lasts for seventeen minutes.

Those who built it were Neolithic farmers, with no metal tools and no wheel. Great stones carved with spirals stand around the mound.

Only a few dozen places in the solstice lottery are drawn each year. Those who get in generally say one thing on coming out of the chamber: it is brighter inside than outside.
