Glendalough · The Monastery Between Two Lakes

Glendalough · The Monastery Between Two Lakes

Glendalough is a monastic ruin in a valley: a round tower dozens of metres high stands in the graveyard, beside small stone churches and rows of cross-carved slabs.

The monastery was raided by Vikings and burned by English armies; the monks left and the stone stayed. The door of the round tower is set a few metres above the ground and reached by ladder, which was then drawn up; that was for hiding from raiders.

There are two lakes in the valley. Locals say that when you reach the second lake you should not look into the water; it is quiet there in a way that is not quite right.
