Krakatoa · An Explosion Heard Half a World Away
Share
When Krakatoa erupted in 1883, the sound was heard four thousand kilometres away, the tsunami rose above thirty metres, more than thirty thousand people died, and the sky stayed red with ash for two years.
The explosion removed most of an island. What was left later grew a new crater, Anak Krakatoa, which is still rising.
Fishermen nearby say that before a tsunami the sea pulls back first. So in those days the unusual low tide mattered more than the noise.
