Mount Bromo · What Is Thrown into the Crater
Share
The crater of Mount Bromo smokes all year, and its ash has piled into a black sea of sand. Before dawn, more people come up for the sunrise than there is ash.
Each year the Tengger hold the Kasada rite here: they carry livestock and produce up the mountain and throw the offerings into the crater, asking the mountain god for safety.
They say the crater is a place that accepts things. Whatever is thrown in and not received, the mountain will come and take itself.
