High Street Haunted House · The mansion converted into a psychiatric hospital
Share
This old building on High Street was built in 1892 and once served as quarters for expatriate civil servants before being converted into a psychiatric hospital during the Japanese occupation.
It remained vacant for a long time after the war, and nearby residents claimed they could hear the sound of chains dragging on the floor and a woman crying at night. For a time, the windows upstairs would open and close on their own, as if someone were pacing back and forth inside.
During later demolition and reconstruction, workers discovered old medical records and iron beds hidden within the cavity walls. Today, new buildings stand there, but old-time Hongkongers still call it the “High Street Haunted House.”
