Cape Sounion · The Column Where Wishes Were Made to the Sea
Share
Cape Sounion is the southernmost point of mainland Greece. On the headland above the Aegean stand the dozen or so remaining columns of the temple.
The old local custom was to carve names into the columns; a group of sailors from Ephesus in particular cut what they wanted to say into the shafts and the steps — the marks are still there.
Byron also carved his name on one of the columns. Writing on the temple is not allowed now, but those older inscriptions are protected.
