Eleusinian Mysteries · The Thing That Must Not Be Told
Share
The Eleusinian Mysteries continued for nearly two thousand years. Participants walked from Athens to Eleusis, watched and listened inside the temple and drank something, then went home with one line: I have seen the road after death.
The content of the rite was strictly forbidden to repeat. Aristotle, Plato and Roman emperors were initiates; anyone who disclosed the secret was put to death, so no one today can say clearly what happened inside.
The site is now a spread of platforms and broken columns. The caretaker says the most famous thing here is not what has been dug up, but the part that has not.
