Père Lachaise Cemetery · The List Buried Here
Share
Père Lachaise Cemetery holds Wilde, Chopin, Bizet and countless members of the Paris Commune; the slopes pile one above another, and the gravestones are packed together like a small town.
What circulates here is that at night shadows move along the burial paths, and that people leave lipstick marks on Wilde’s monument — later fenced off, because too many came to kiss it.
The keepers clear the grounds each morning when they open the gates. They say a cemetery is the one place in the city that lives by a list.
