Catacombs of Paris · The tunnel where six million people sleep
Share
To free up urban cemeteries, about six million skeletons were moved into underground quarries in the 18th century, stacked into kilometers of bone walls arranged in patterns and crosses.
Only a small section is open for public viewing, while the rest remains a “restricted zone.” Every year, explorers enter illegally.
Two of the most famous children were found in 2004, having been underground for a long time. It is said that the last photo on their camera was pointed into the depths of the tunnel; the flash had fired, but the image was pitch black.
