Carnac Stones · Three Thousand Stones in a Row
Share
The stones of Carnac consist of more than three thousand standing stones arranged in a dozen or so long rows, running for several kilometres, and predating the Egyptian pyramids by centuries.
Who put them there and why has never been settled. The local legend is far simpler: a Roman legion was driven to the shore here by pursuers, and a saint turned them to stone with a word.
Every year someone pulls out a small stone as a souvenir, and the standing stones are now fenced. The notice puts it this way: it is not we who put the stones back.
